Departed Gillingham midfielder Danny Spiller has backed Steve Tilson to become the new manager and believes whoever is appointed needs to start soon.
Spiller (pictured) signed for Blue Square Bet Premier Luton last week and knows the clock is ticking for Gillingham to snap up the best bargains around.
Gillingham’s new manager will need to strengthen at the back and in attack but chairman Paul Scally has yet to find the right man for the job.
Spiller said: "It would be nice for them to get a manager in place so the players know where they are at and so the new manager can start to build.
"The quicker he can build, the quicker he can get his hands on the players he deems fit to push Gillingham to the next stage."
Spiller added: "Players will be starting to think about getting themselves in shape for next season and managers will be looking to do deals to put their players in place and get their squads ready."
And Spiller believes Tilson could be the man to return Gillingham back to the higher echelons of the Football League, along with Scott Lindsey – who was assistant to Tilson at their previous club Lincoln.
"I would quite like to see Steve Tilson to be honest," Spiller said.
"He did wonders for Southend on the budget he had and he took them all the way to the Championship from League 2.
"Given a good budget, which Gillingham can offer, I think he could do a cracking job and he is a very well respected man in the game. Scott Lindsey knows the game inside out and I think that whoever they take charge of next they could take them to good places."
