Deadline nears for children's awards nominations

DO YOU know a child who has triumphed over adversity? Or how about a health hero who deserves recognition?

If you do, there's still time to nominate them, and others, in the Ward & Partners annual Children's Award.

The scheme, launched by the Kent-based estate agency chain in association with the Kent Messenger Group and Demelza House Children's Hospice at Bobbing, near Sittingbourne, is designed to recognise the efforts and achievements of both physically and mentally disabled children and those who have dedicated their lives to them.

Ward & Partners has given £100,000 to the Kent Community Foundation, which will administer the money on its behalf. Awards will be made to the winners of each of five categories.

The closing date for nominations is Friday, October 17. Nomination forms are available from any branch of Ward & Partners or Kent Messenger Group offices.

The categories are:

Triumph over Adversity: for children with severe disabilities who are working to overcome them. There will be awards for under-sevens, eight to 11 and 12 to 16.

Good Carer: Honours those who selflessly commit so much of their time and effort unpaid to supporting those who need constant help.

Health Heroes: Open to all members of the health profession who, in the view of colleagues, patients or managers, show exceptional dedication and compassion.

Demelza House Children's Hospice award: For siblings of children with special needs or disabilities who have selflessly given their time and effort to create a better life for the family.

Local Kent-registered children's charity: Open to the public to nominate a chosen charity.

Award winners will be closely consulted about what they want to do with their money. It could pay for specialist equipment or holidays, but whatever it is, it will improve the quality of life for children, carers or their families.

The first awards night will take place at the Ramada Hotel and Resort, Hollingbourne, near Maidstone, on December 17.
