A man accused of causing the death of a student has made a brief appearance at court.

Mateusz Makiewicz, of Canterbury Road, Sittingbourne, was arrested two days after a crash on the A2 at Moor Street, in Rainham, which killed 19-year-old April George.

April, who studied criminal justice at the University of Kent's Chatham Maritime campus, was travelling with her father Steven in a Peugeot 206 when they were involved in a collision with a Citeron Picassso on December 7.

Makiewicz, a 29-year-old Polish national, was charged with causing death by careless driving, but has not entered a plea in relation to the charge.

He appeared before Medway magistrates today. The case against him was adjourned for a week and he was remanded in custody.

April, who had a part-time job as a receptionist at Sheerness Dental Centre, was given emergency treatment at the scene, but died in hospital later.

Mr George, of Crouch Hill Court, Lower Halstow, suffered a fractured pelvis and bleeding in his spleen. He has since been released from hospital.

Makiewicz will next appear at the same court on Friday, January 20, when his case is expected to be committed to crown court.
