A CAR driver who died on the notorious Deal-Sandwich road last Friday night has been named as Gary Trevelyan, 30, of Campbell Road, Walmer.

Mr Trevelyan's Ford Mondeo hit a tree near a bend, struck an oncoming Rover car and then flipped onto its roof. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The female driver and her boyfriend in the Rover were taken to hospital for treatment but later released. She suffered a broken toe and he had bruising.

A 59-year-old Ford Escort driver from Minster has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by reckless or dangerous driving. He is thought to have been following the Mondeo.

He has been released on police bail while investigations continue and is due to return to Dover Police Station on April 29.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact Dover Police on 01304 240055.

The crash, near the entrance to Cottington Court Lakes, was at the same spot as a double death crash in October 2002.
