A speeding teenager who knocked down and killed a mother and daughter as they crossed a road has been sentenced to five years youth custody.
Jamie Smith, of Alamein Avenue, Chatham, was also banned from driving for seven years.
Maidstone Crown Court heard the 18-year-old was travelling at about 50mph in a 30mph zone his Seat Ibiza when he hit Elsie Blades, 84, and 60-year-old Marilyn Herlihy.
The tragedy happened as they crossed Station Road in Strood on July 26 last year.
Smith, who had only passed his driving test five months earlier, admitted two charges of causing death by dangerous driving.
A packed courtroom heard moving statements from the victims' family.
Judge Andrew Patience QC told Smith: "When you are eventually released from the sentence I am about to pass you will have the opportunity to resume a normal life.
"On the other hand, nothing can be said or done by anyone to bring back those two victims of your utter folly."
