After helping Southend rise from obscurity to the Championship, Gillingham’s new signing Adam Barrett is no stranger to promotion.
And Barrett, right, says he sees the Gills as the answer to his hopes of recapturing some of those glory days from his past.
A clean sheet on his debut, at Wycombe on Tuesday night, made for a happy start to the 32-year-old defender's career in Kent and he said: "This is a club looking to be ambitious and go somewhere. It’s a club that wants to get promotion and be successful and that’s what I want to be a part of.
"To be around hungry players keeps yourself going and I am delighted to be here. There is a buzz around the club and that’s nice. If you are going to be successful, you need that.
"There are going to be blips and ups and downs but if you have that spirit, fight and determination like we have, then you give yourselves half a chance.
"We don’t want to get carried away, there is a long way to go. I have been in many situations like this before but if we keep showing that attitude and desire, then we won’t be far short."
