Ferries from the Port of Dover ran with delays and there were problems on the roads as the remnants of Hurricane Katia swept across the UK.

Officials at the port warned passengers to expect gale force winds in the English Channel for much of the day on Monday.

P&O Ferries, SeaFrance and DFDS Seaways all reported disruption because of the adverse weather conditions.

Passengers were urged to contact their ferry operator before travelling.

Meanwhile, the A252 was closed twice in both directions because of fallen trees between the A28 Canterbury Road and the A251 Faversham Road.

In Folkestone, Horn Street was shut because of fallen power cables between the A259 Seabrook Road and Church Road.

However, Kent escaped the worst of the weather, with parts of Scotland experiencing the strongest winds.

The Met Office issued an amber alert there, warning of disruption to public transport and the possibility of damage to trees and buildings.
