Deon Burton has no interest in talking promotion, despite the Gills riding high in League 2.
The experienced striker netted the opening goal against Northampton on Tuesday night to set Gillingham on course for their fifth straight away win of the season.
By the end of the night, the Gills sat five points clear at the top of the table.
But Burton (pictured), with around 600 first team appearances to his name and a professional career stretching back almost two decades taking in 13 clubs, said: "It’s a bit early still but we are top of the league and that’s a bit better than being bottom.
"We’ll just see where we are in May. What we have is that determination and will to win – we showed that on Tuesday."
Burton, 35, signed in the summer after a couple of seasons in Azerbaijan and he has been a regular starter under Martin Allen.
He finished Tuesday’s game on the bench but continued to back his team-mates from the sidelines as they dug deep to hold on for the win.
Burton said: "When it’s 2-1 and you’ve got a couple of minutes to go, it’s going to be backs-to-the-wall and they are going to lump it forward, which they did. So fair play to the boys who finished the game, they stuck in there and defended well.
"I was just telling them to stay focused and make sure we didn’t concede again. I’ll do what I can to help the team."
