Thieves used a stolen digger in a failed attempt to steal two cash machines from a Kent supermarket in the early hours of Monday morning.

The raid took place shortly before 4.15am at Tesco in Gillingham. It is understood that a lot of damage has been caused - but that the raiders failed to get away with cash.

The JCB-style digger was wedged into the wall. One of two CCTV machines was on view, with the other buried underneath a pile of rubble outside the store.

The area was cordoned off by crime scene investigators, who scoured the area for clues. No arrests have been made.
