Dodgy charity collectors on the increase

POLICE have warned that the number of bogus charity collectors in Bromley is on the increase.

The announcement comes after a number of leading charities alerted police to unscrupulous thieves targeting doorstep donations and charity shops for bags of second-hand loot.

Det Insp Jane Corrigan said: “These bogus collectors prey on the good will of the public and take donated clothing to make a profit for themselves. It is absolutely disgusting that there are people who are willing to take advantage people’s generosity for their own commercial gain, and are prepared to cheat charities out of much needed donations.”

Police are now asking householders not to leave items outside charity shops and to check that any requests that they receive for donations are genuine.

Any donation bags should have the charities name and registration number listed.

Det Insp Corrigan added: “We want people to be confident that they can give to charities but they should be careful to avoid unscrupulous individuals and companies looking to exploit their generosity and goodwill.”
