Orchards, the White Cliffs of Dover – and a unique spirit. These are among the enduring images of Kent for Alan Willett, the Lord Lieutenant.
We asked him to join our Celebrate Kent campaign by giving us his view of what’s great about the county.
He said that orchards, hopfields, oast-houses, the White Cliffs of Dover and Canterbury Cathedral were images that stick in people's minds when they think about Kent and are remembered worldwide.
But he went on: "Our unique geography is a key factor in making our county special.
"We are not dominated by one central city or town, but are a mosaic of communities. We’ve been an island, surrounded on three sides by sea, and the other by London and difficult transport links westward.
"Over the centuries, we have developed a unique Spirit of Kent and, in the current difficult and destabilising global scenario, I believe people will turn more than ever to things they can understand and rely on – their roots, heritage, culture, county.
"That is why my chosen Lieutenancy theme for this year is a celebration of Kent’s diverse – but not divided – and strong mosaic of communities. Our aspiration is to celebrate Kent, its unique history and culture, serve its communities – and contribute positively to its future."
We have joined forces with kmfm, our sister radio station, for a Summer of Love for Kent. Throughout the summer kmfm will be finding out what its listeners like. And you can join in.
Put bad news, talk of recession and even the heatwave to one side and tell us what makes our small part of the world so special.
