About 40 firefighters tackled a blaze in a high street.

The fire erupted in a first floor flat above the Andrews & Co estate agents in New Romney.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus were sent in to battle the flames and the High Street remains closed to traffic.

Eyewitnesses said the flat was wrecked, with the roof caving in but nobody has been injured.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said: "All persons are accounted for and no-one has been hurt in the incident."

Firefighters were first called out to the scene at 4.50am, but the fire was dealt with by 9.20am.

Six fire engines attended along with one command support vehicle and a height vehicle.
