He made the plea in an interview with the KM Group just before Christmas.

This year has been especially busy for Dr Williams with the Lambeth Conference in Canterbury over the summer.

The Archbishop has frequently been in the headlines with controversial issues including the divide in the Anglican Church, homosexuality and Sharia law.

More recently Dr Williams has given his views on the economic downturn, the invasion of Iraq and the disestablishment of the Church of England.

In looking back at 2008, The Archbishop said the two most significant public events of the year have been the credit crunch and the US Presidential Election.

Christmas Day for Dr Williams will involve a visit to HM Canterbury Prison to take a service for the inmates, the Christmas service at Canterbury Cathedral and a visit to the city's homeless centre for Christmas dinner.
