Driver arrested after crashing through windscreen

A MOTORIST who smashed through his car windscreen after crashing into a pensioner's car tried to make a dramatic escape.

The driver managed to climb out of his mangled car and dash across a footbridge following the accident in Pier Road, Gillingham, at around 10.20pm on Friday. He was closely followed by his passenger as they headed towards Chatham Maritime.

later two young men were arrested and taken to Sittingbourne police station for questioning and to be breathalysed.

After the crash, traffic ground to a halt and the queue of cars stretched back into the Medway Tunnel as emergency services sealed off the road.

Firefighters at the scene said no-one had been trapped but the elderly man involved in the crash had been put on a stretcher and taken to hospital with minor injuries.

A spokesman for Medway Police said today that no-one had yet been charged following the accident.
