Driver dies and six hurt as car crashes into tree

A YOUNG driver was killed when a car, believed to have seven people in it, crashed into a tree.

Six other people were taken to hospital after the collision, at the junction of Southborough Lane and Oxhawth Crescent, Bromley, shortly before 1.45am on Sunday. Firefighters cut free the driver and a passenger from the Mini Cooper.

The driver, a man thought to be 21 years old, sustained multiple injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 3.10am. His family have been informed but police await formal identification before releasing his name.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: "We believe seven people were travelling in the car. Six people were taken to two local hospitals. Five have been discharged, one is in a stable condition."

The road was closed until 7.30am. A post mortem examination is due to be carried out.

Collision investigators are likely to interview the six other people involved.
