THE driver of a silver Daihatsu Fourtrak four-wheel-drive was seriously injured after apparently being flung from the vehicle when it crashed off the A21 near Pembury last night.

The driver, a man in his 20s from Peterborough, suffered serious head injuries. His condition at the the Kent and Sussex Hospital at Tunbridge Wells is described as "stable".

Sub Officer John Wheeler, of Tunbridge Wells fire station, said: "The vehicle appeared to have left the road, gone up a bank, over a four feet high fence and then rolled into a field.

"The driver was some 30 or 40 feet from the vehicle and may have been thrown clear as it rolled. He had suffered multiple injuries and we assisted paramedics in stabilising him.

"He was carried to a waiting ambulance on a spinal long board and taken to hospital," he added.

The accident happened at about 9.45pm as the vehicle was heading south along the A21 dual carriageway close to its junction with Hastings Road, Pembury.

During the rescue operation firefighters provided auxiliary lighting at the scene. No other vehicle was involved in the incident.
