A driver is in a critical condition today after being impaled on railings.

The man, believed to be 35, was thrown onto the metal rails when his car crashed in the early hours of yesterday.

Emergency services were called to Maidstone Road, Chatham, near MediClean Laundry, at about 2am.

They found a Hyundai Coupe had crashed and the male driver on the ground next to the car.

He suffered a punctured lung after being impaled in the chest and other serious injuries, including to his head.

The man was taken to Medway Martitime Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash, which closed the road for almost six hours.

A Medway Police spokesman said: "South East Coast Ambulance Service attended the scene and the man was taken to Medway Maritime Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

Maidstone Road was closed at approximately 2.15am and reopened at 7.45am."
