A LORRY became jammed under a railway bridge in Bryant Road, Strood, causing disruption to road and rail traffic for three hours.

Commuter services to London were halted after the accident which happened at around 6.15am on Friday.

The driver, who lives nearby, said he turned into Bryant Road without thinking. It was a route he normally took when driving his car. He said did not wish to be named.

Employees at BP Motors, adjacent to the bridge, had come in specially early because they had a heavy programme of MOTs to complete. “We’ve wasted all that time,” said one of them. “Because of this, customers can’t reach us.”

Among those whose car was booked in for an MOT, was Tony Watts, of Patton Car Sales in Strood High Street. As he watched the vehicle freed by a recovery vehicle, he said: “This is crazy. It’s taken them less time to pull the lorry out than it takes me to smoke a cigarette. But they’ve kept us all waiting for three hours.”
