NEGLECTING basic car maintenance in the summer months can cause as many problems as in the winter, says motor insurer, RIAS.
Long car journeys for holidays, the hot weather, stop-go traffic and high speeds all take their toll on the car and our patience. Here are some quick tips from RIAS on making sure you and your car keep cool:
* Cars need fluids, too. Check the oil, coolant, transmission, break and windscreen fluids (anti-freeze helps the engine under hot conditions as well as cold).
* Tighten your belt! Loose belts will not turn the water pump and/or fan properly which means possible overheating. Also check belts for cracking or other signs of wear.
* Check the rubber. In extreme conditions, check tyres every two hours or 100 miles (tyre pressures increase with temperature). Check them for uneven or excessive tread wear, too.
* Temperature light on? Turn off the air conditioning if you have it on, next slow down and, if needs be, switch on the heater for a few minutes.
Still on? Pull over, switch off the engine and raise the bonnet. Do not open your radiator while hot, it will scald you - wait 30 minutes.
* Refresh your batteries. Hot weather can shorten your battery’s life. Weak or old batteries should be tested and replaced if necessary.
* Take the heat off you. Hot weather impairs judgement, increases bad tempers and tiredness, leading to accidents and road rage so take regular breaks and keep your water and sunscreen topped up
And, just to be sure, don’t forget your breakdown cover. RIAS motor insurance comes with the option of breakdown cover - for further information call 0800 052 3666.
