Drivers warned of county's first traffic light cameras

DRIVERS are being warned about two new cameras to snap cars jumping red traffic lights on the A2 Chatham Hill.

The cameras, put in place by the Kent & Medway Safety Camera Partnership, are the first in the county.

They will be trialled on March 10, with a view to making them permanent from March 17.

Jumping red lights is one of the most dangerous manoeuvres on the road. The partnership decided to install cameras after a number of incidents at Chatham Hill.

Driver caught shooting the lights face a £60 fixed penalty and three penalty points on their licence.

Lorraine Collins, the partnership's communications fficer, said: "Red light running is a serious crime which kills and injures hundreds of people every year.

"The purpose of operating red light cameras at this particular location is to reduce the number of fatal and serious injury crashes.

"They are not there to punish drivers but to encourage them to think about their driving behaviour, slow down, observe speed limits and traffic signals and contribute to improved road safety."
