A centre to help small businesses to grow and flourish in Thanet will be opened officially by HRH The Duke of Kent tomorrow (Wednesday).

In his 90-minute visit, the Duke will unveil a plaque at the recently completed Marlowe Innovation Centre which will house high quality space for either office-based or light industrial-based small businesses. He will then tour the centre’s facilities and the Marlowe Academy where he will meet staff and students.

The Marlowe Innovation Centre, which has so far attracted interest from about 20 companies, is close to the Westwood Cross shopping and entertainment centre, business parks and Manston Airport.

Tenants will be able to use the restaurant, public library and adult education centre, all based at the Academy.The centre was built with funding and contributions from the European Regional Development Fund, Kent County Council, Thanet council, East Kent Partnership and the Roger De Haan Charitable Trust.

Roger De Haan, former chairman of the over-50s insurance and holiday company, Saga, has sponsored both The Marlowe and Folkestone academies. He said: “I believe that the Innovation Centre will provide a link between education and employment, and will help young people as they embark on their careers.”

Ian Johnson, Principal of the Marlowe Academy said: “We are looking forward to the opening ceremony and to meeting the Duke of Kent - it will be a proud day. The Marlowe Innovation Centre will be a great addition to the area, helping to nurture small businesses and to bring more jobs. At the same time, our students will benefit from placements helping them to boost their confidence and to further develop their business skills.”
