POLICE are talking to a 79-year-old motorist in connection with a collision that killed a pedestrian.

A 45-year-old man died in the incident on Friday night.

It happened at around 10pm in Ashford Road, New Romney, near the junction with Rolfe Lane.

The victim - named by police as David Charles Williams - was pronounced dead at the scene. He lived in the town.

Kent Police said on Sunday the man helping officers with their inquiries had not been arrested.

The emergency services were alerted after Mr Williams was found lying in the road.

The road was closed until 2am on Saturday while officers from Kent Police's Serious Crash Investigation Unit examined the scene.

By mid morning on Saturday a collection of floral tributes had been left at the spot by Mr Williams's family and friends. One said he would be "sorely missed".

The incident happened on the road just outside Prescott House, a Shepway District Council sheltered housing block on the outskirts of New Romney.

One elderly resident, who asked not to be named, said: "The first I knew was when I saw all the police cars, ambulances and a fire engine.

"The police came round knocking on all our doors asking if we'd seen or heard anything but I certainly hadn't until I saw all the flashing blue lights."
