Elderly woman killed on dual carriageway

A 77-year-old woman died after she was hit by a car on a busy Kent dual carriageway on Wednesday.

The tragedy happened on the A28 between Westgate and Birchington, near the St Augustine's Hotel, shortly after 12.40pm.

The road was closed as Kent Air Ambulance landed to tend to the victim, who lived in the Birchington area.

A police spokesman said: "Unfortunately, she died before the crew had a chance to take her to hospital."

The car, which was heading towards Margate, was driven by a 78-year-old Birchington man. He was treated at the scene for shock but was not badly hurt.

The road was fully reopened at 4.40pm.
