A safety warning about electric blankets has been issued after one caused a minor house fire.

Firefighters were called to Maplesden Close, in Barming, just before 3am on Friday morning.

The retired home owner had switched on a blanket for extra warmth in bed. He was woken up by the smoke alarm, and found flames at the end of his bed.

After hearing the alarm his wife, who was still downstairs, dialled 999.

Watch Manager Howard Dellow said: “As people try to keep warm during this cold weather spell, we want to remind all Kent residents of added fire dangers in the home, as this incident demonstrates.

"First, make sure that you have a working smoke alarm fitted in every level of your home. In this instance the occupier was asleep when the fire broke out and without the smoke alarm sounding the fire could have developed undetected, possibly resulting in serious injury to the man, and further damage to the property.

“Secondly, if you use an electric blanket to keep warm, make sure you get it tested. Although they are not dangerous in themselves, blankets that are over 10 years old or that haven’t been tested in the last year present an increased risk of starting a fire.”

Owners of electric blankets have been told not to fold them as it can damage wiring, not to leave them on all night, and to check that they have a British Standard Kitemark.

Blankets should be tested regularly and, if old or showing signs of wear, should be replaced.
