Chicken products are being pulled from the shelves of more supermarkets over fears they are contaminated with salmonella.

Sainsbury's, Waitrose and M&S have become the latest retailers to recall food items containing chicken alongside fast food chain Pret A Manger.

Aldi announced on Thursday that it was removing four of its Food + Go items from fridges over fears they could contain the dangerous bacteria.
Two types of chicken Caesar wrap with two different use by dates, sold by Aldi, have been hit with recall notices by the Food Standards Agency, which urged anyone with the lunch items to not eat them and where possible return them to their nearest store for a full refund.

Symptoms caused by salmonella usually include a fever, sickness, diarrhoea or stomach cramps and often resolve in a few days with rest, but the infection can pose more of a risk to those who are more vulnerable such as the elderly, younger children and those with an underlying health condition.

Pret A Manger says it has taken the decision to take food containing cooked chicken from its shelves as a precaution after an alert from a supplier.

A spokesman for the company explained: “As a precautionary measure, we’ve temporarily removed the majority of chicken items on our menu due to a potential food safety risk at one of our suppliers.

"We hope to have these products back in shops soon. We apologise for any inconvenience.”

Sainsbury's has recalled more than 30 items containing chicken including a range of its sandwiches, salads and wraps, alongside some cooked chicken slices, thigh fillets and larger sandwich platters.

All affected individual salads, sandwiches and wraps have use by dates between May 3 and May 14, the cooked chicken products, thigh fillets and slices which are at risk will have use by dates between May 3 and May 20 while the sandwich platters that should not be eaten will have use by dates between May 3 and May 12.

M&S and Waitrose have both pulled more than 10 popular sandwich, salad and snack items.

M&S, like other retailers, says its customers will be entitled to a full refund if they return their food to the nearest store while a recall notice from Waitrose for the items, with use by dates up to and including May 14, asks customers to not eat the food affected, package it back up and take it back to Waitrose to get their money back.

The request adds: "Waitrose is recalling the above products as a precautionary measure due to the potential presence of salmonella, which may cause illness if consumed. No other Waitrose products are impacted."
