Former Newcastle youngster Darren Lough is the latest player aiming to impress Gillingham manaager Andy Hessenthaler.
Lough, who progressed through the youth set-up at Newcastle, was brought to the attention of Hessenthaler by the club’s Newcastle-based sponsors Automatic Retailing.
He played in the pre-season friendlies against Bishop's Stortford on Friday and Ebbsfleet on Saturday.
Hessenthaler said: “They asked us to have a look at him and I thought he did okay.
“He slotted in quite well at left-back on Friday. He did okay as a left-sided centre-half but you could see that the heading side of it and getting off the floor is perhaps not his forte.
“But he dropped off and he was quite comfortable, and you can see he was at a proper club. We’ll give that one some thought.”
Fellow trialists Malvin Kamara, Jack Clarke and Jason Norville could all be back this week training at Beechings Cross.
