Explosion cuts power to 11,500 homes

Thousands of homes were left without power after an explosion at an electricity substation.

Smoke was seen coming from the Burham Grid Substation at about 5.30pm on Bank Holiday Monday after a circuit breaker failed.

The explosion - and the subsequent work by EDF Energy and firefighters to put out the blaze and restore power - cut electricity to 11,500 homes between 4.40pm and 8.30pm.
