A former Kent golf boss who admitted trying to sell weapon parts to Iran after being extradited to America has reportedly been transferred to a UK prison.

Retired businessman Christopher Tappin had previously denied selling batteries for surface-to-air missiles - but changed his plea as part of a deal with prosecutors.

Mr Tappin, who was president of the Kent Golf Society, was jailed for 33 months in El Paso, Texas, in March.

The father-of-two, 66, has now been allowed to serve the remainder of his sentence at home and is said to have been returned to Wandsworth Prison, south London.

Millionaire Mr Tappin’s 64-year-old wife Elaine, who was too unwell to travel to America to visit him in prison, is said to be “relieved” at his return.

Mr Tappin, from Orpington, was extradited under a treaty with the US that means prosecutors can demand a suspect is handed over without the evidence ever being tested in a British court.

He had previously denied attempting to sell batteries for surface-to-air missiles which were to be shipped from the US to Tehran, saying he was the victim of an FBI sting.

However, he pleaded guilty in return for a reduced sentence.

It is understood he will have to serve 14 months in Britain – half of his remaining sentence.
