Servicemen who lost their lives to keep the Straits of Dover clear from enemy invasion were remembered in a patrol on Sunday.

Twelve standards were carried by members of the Royal Naval Association (RNA), the Royal British Legion, the Merchant Navy and members of the Burma Star Association during the service at the Dover Patrol Monument – one of only three in the world – in St Margaret’s.

The patrol was led by parade marshall and Royal British Legion member Malcolm Wells.

Prayers and the hymn, Eternal Father Strong to Save, was read by lay reader David Clippingdale.

Rick Ashby, chairman of the Kent, Sussex and Surrey branch of the RNA said there were about 50 or 60 people present.

“It went very well. There are just three of those monuments in the world, one in America, one in France, and the other in St Margaret’s,” he said.
