Fight not over for community centre

A group which failed in its bid to create a community centre in Cranbrook has vowed to continue its fight.

The Weald Centre Group, which wants to redevelop the former Tunbridge Wells council offices in Cranbrook High Street, had their hopes shattered when the council’s cabinet decided not to back the venture, claiming the figures did not add up.

Now Howard Cox, a leading campaigner for the centre, has said he create an "idiot's guide" to his plan to convince councillors that it will work.

Mr Cox said: "“The guide will show the council experts that the plan is credible and should be evolved and developed and not attacked without informed knowledge. The plan is self-financing with no burden on the tax payer."

However, Tunbridge Wells council's concerns have been echoed by Cranbrook and Sissinghurst Parish Council.

Cllr Kim Fletcher told a meeting last week: "If you have a good plan it is defensible but we keep hearing it is not good enough. The business plan needs to be radically reviewed in the light of a properly constituted group.

“We have to accept that these plans are not good enough and they have to go away and get them sorted out and come back with a proper plan."

He said the group would set up a legalised community interest company by the end of the month.

Three borough councillors for Cranbrook - Cllr Peter Davies, Cllr Linda Hall and Cllr Sean Holden - have asked for the cabinet decision to be called in to the scrutiny committee.
