An Oscar-winning movie editor, Thanet’s Golden Globe-winning actress and the men behind the hit animation Wallace and Gromit lent their support to a new film festival for Kent youngsters.

The inaugural Kino Kids Film Festival at the Granville Cinema in Ramsgate rewarded the creative talents of schoolchildren from across the county.

Local filmmaker Jan Dunn, who hosted the event with Elaine Wickham, her colleague at Medb Films, said: “We were delighted to be asked to organise a film festival for kids’ films but knowing how competitive the industry is, we wanted to mark it with a handful of awards to encourage the stronger talent.”

Paul Greengrass, who has directed films including Bourne Supremacy and United 93, lent his name to the Best Film Award, won by a group of teenagers who produced a comedy about being gay.

The Brenda Blethyn Acting Award was presented to Canterbury High School for their slapstick comedy entitled Titanic Year Olympic Games 2012.

Meanwhile, the Wallace and Gromit Award for Best Animation went to two youngsters for a film produced at a summer animation workshop run by the Kent-based University College for the Creative Arts.
