Firearm officers were called to Rainham on Monday after reports of a man in possession of a rifle.
Two calls were received by police to say a man had been seen with a gun in a house in Roberts Road at 3.30pm.
The road was cordoned off as police dealt with the incident.
A neighbour who asked not to be identified said: "It was quite thrilling to see all those police cars, armed police and dog handlers. I can't remember the last time I saw so many coppers.
"You don't expect this sort of thing in Roberts Road. The worst thing we normally have is a delay between the parked cars while drivers exchange greetings."
A Medway police spokesman said: “The area around the house was contained and the road was closed at the time, but re-opened at about 5:45pm.”
No-one was hurt and officers arrested a 39-year-old Rainham man and seized an air rifle.
The man has since been released on police bail until April 3 pending further enquiries.
