Firefighters have been tackling a blaze at Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham this afternoon.

Five appliances went to the site, in Windmill Road, after a fire broke out in B Wing at around 3.50pm.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue said : “It was a small fire which was dealt with swiftly. The cause is not yet known.”

A nurse, who did not wish to be named, said: “I was working in admissions and discharge on the first floor.

"The firemen came through on to the ward and told us to get ready to evacuate and take the nearest exit.

"We had bed patients and people being picked up. We were outside for about 45 minutes.

“I couldn’t believe it, it was surreal.”

About 25 firefighters tackled the blaze at the hospital in Windmill Road. They were stood down at 4.30pm.

An investigation has been launched into the cause of the fire.
