Firefighters battled through the night to tackle a massive blaze at a Kent paper mill.

At its height the fire at Snodland Paper Mill, which started in a waste compacter at around 5.30pm Thursday, spread to 500 tons of baled paper.

Ten pumps plus specialist appliances from stations including Strood, Marden, Larkfield, Halling, Borough Green, Ashford, Maidstone, Paddock Wood and Faversham were at the scene.

Crews used water from the River Medway and on-site hydrants to fight the blaze.

By 11.34pm firefighters had managed to confine the fire to a single stack of paper and by 12.30pm the operation was scaled down to four pumps.

Relief crews were at the scene throughout Friday amd worked with the manager of the site to break up the stacks and damp down the paper.

No one is believed to be hurt.
