Firefighters spent three hours tackling a blaze at a house in a Medway village on Thursday evening.
Crews from Strood, Grain and Hoo were called to the fire at a terraced house in Mallard Way, Lower Stoke, near Rochester. About 15 firefighters were at the scene.
They were called to the property shortly before midnight after a neighbour reported seeing flames coming from the end of the house.
The fire is believed to have broken out in a ground floor garage and spread to the bedroom above.
The owner of the property was at work at the time of the incident. No one was hurt.
A spokesman for Strood fire station said: "A neighbour said they heard a bang and then saw flames. When we arrived there was smoke and flames coming out of the garage.
"We extinguished the bulk of the fire then went in to carry on fighting it. The upstairs of the house was smoke damaged while the main heat damage was downstairs."
An investigation into the fire has been launched.
