First offer could be a write-off

RAC Legal Services is warning motorists that they do not have to accept the first offer an insurance company makes on a vehicle which has been declared a write-off.

Queries about insurance companies’ offers are among the five most frequently asked of the RAC’s legal experts. The motoring organisation’s new CRASH code is designed to ease the confusion for motorists.

Many claimants are disappointed at the first price, often perceived as too low, offered by their insurance company.

Mark Hodges, RAC Legal Service’s spokesman, said: “Insurance companies have an obligation to pay the ‘market value’ for your vehicle, but check your policy details as some may contain different terms. You can always dispute the amount offered. You will, though, need to provide evidence as to why you feel your vehicle has been undervalued.”

Check Parker’s Guide, available in most bookshops or newsagents.

Read your local paper, cutting out any similar vehicles for sale. Ak your local car dealer. Seek out similar vehicles on the internet. Hold on to your receipt to prove the price you paid.
