Fishermen's protest closes motorway

Queues are expected on Kent's motorways this evening as phase two of Operation Stack is put into place.

Freight traffic is being stacked up on the coastbound carriageway of the M20 between junctions 8 (Leeds Castle) and 9 (Ashford West).

Traffic other than freight is diverted from the motorway at junction 8 onto the A20.

Non freight vehicles are also being diverted the A2 and M2.

It follows industrial action by French fishermen at Calais.

Police are warning motorists they may face jams and delays and reminding them to take

adequate provisions of food and water and necessary medication with them.

Freight traffic must join Stack queue at junction 8 of the M20.

Anyone bypassing this phase will be returned to the back of the queue to ensure the most efficient flow of traffic to the ports.

Phase 1 of Stack between junctions 11 and 12 coastbound is not in place as part of the current measure.
