Planes and music will fill the air at this weekend’s Headcorn Spitfire Proms Spectacular. Headcorn Aerodrome is the venue for the KM-sponsored two-day flying extravaganza, which incorporates a balloon festival, wings, wheels, steam and music to suit all tastes.
The event kicks off on Saturday, August 23, and Sunday, August 24, from 6am-7am with a launch of of 50 hot air balloons, organised by balloon club Windbags.
The balloons will launch again on both evenings; on Saturday, the plan is to have all 50 glowing in the night sky while the orchestra plays below.
Liz Meek, from Windbags, said: “We’ll all go up in to the sky and turn our burners on so the balloons light up. They should look like great big lighbulbs.”
Entertainment during the day tomorrow will include displays of classic cars, steam engines and aircraft, as well as fly-pasts of P51 Mustangs aircraft and a performance by the world aerobatic champion Anna Walker.
The highlight of the evening will be a performance by the National Orchestra, starring soprano Sarah Ryan, accompanied by a choreographed flying display featuring legendary pilot Charlie Brown in a Spitfire.
The proms will climax with a fireworks display as the orchestra performs traditional proms favourites including Rule Britannia, Land of Hope and Glory and the 1812 Overture.
The flying displays and demonstrations continue on Sunday with the evening devoted to the kmfm Ultimate Party Night.
Local acts will feature heavily in the line-up, including Hobo Jones, the Logan Wilson Band, The Rox and TenStoneBaby. There will also be tribute acts Blues Brothers Little Brother, Rumours of Fleetwood Mac and ABBA Magic.
Headcorn Aerodrome owner Jamie Freeman said: “It’s like a party in the park. People come along with their picnics and it’s a great family atmosphere. They can set up camp and listen to music and have supper at the same time.”
