The redevelopment of Margate FC is in limbo again after Thanet councillors gave plans to build a new medical centre at the club the red card.

The Hartsdown Park side had wanted to build a new complex containing a surgery, dentist, optician and pharmacy next to its current stadium.

It would have acted as a catalyst for the long awaited revamp of its ground but a planning committee last night (Wednesday) voted to refuse permission.

Tom McKenna, chairman of Margate Independent Supporters Association, said fans left the council meeting "dejected" and admitted he was unsure how the club would move forward.

He said: "It's holding up the progress of the club. Less than ten years ago we were playing in the Conference and it's amazing to think that we're now struggling to survive.

"You have to wonder how long the developer will put up with our situation. Every week there seems to be another setback but we'll continue to fight and support the club. That's all we can do."

Mr McKenna urged Margate fans to get behind the team with a large turnout at Saturday's crucial game at home to Harlow.

The match provides an opportunity for the Gate to distance themselves from the relegation zone, with Harlow only two points and one place above them in the Ryman Premier League.
