Forgotten toast caused kitchen blaze

A slice of toast could have cost a woman and her dog her life had fire crews not arrived in time.

Medway firefighters were called to Fort Pitt Street, Chatham, at 3am on Tuesday after a toaster caught light.

It is understood the toaster had been left on top of a hob which had been accidentally switched on.

The heat from the hob then melted the toaster and caused a small fire.

Crews used fire blankets to smother out the flames.

Smoke damage was caused to the kitchen and living room area as well as the stairwell.

An ambulance was called to the scene as the woman had inhaled some smoke but otherwise escaped unharmed.
