A former Army Captain can finally put his feet up
after completing a gruelling 130-mile barefoot walk from Winchester
to Canterbury.

James Milton, from London, arrived at the city's cathedral
earlier today - his 35th birthday.

He is hoping his remarkable challenge will raise thousands of pounds for the charity Help for Heroes, which provides support for wounded British servicemen and women.

James, who served in three separate tours of Iraq, said:
"It's been pretty gruelling. I've walked between a mile and a
half and two miles over gravel on a fairly regular basis. That's
been really painful.

"You can average around three miles per hour over broken ground
if you're wearing shoes. I'm not joking when I say that I got down
to maybe a quarter of a mile per hour at certain points. At times,
it needed all my will power just to put one foot in front of the
other."

James, who now works in communications, used cross country paths
and followed as closely as possible the original Pilgrim's
route.

He said: "I decided to give up shoes for a week in tribute to
the courage of the men and women who've lost their limbs or their
eyesight while serving for their country. It's been about
remembering what they've lost by giving up the things that you and
I take for granted in our everyday lives."

You can sponsor James via his JustGiving page and retrace his footsteps on Twitter and on Facebook.
