Keith Peacock has thrown his support behind Mark Robson as the race to become Gillingham manager hots up.

Peacock, who managed the Gills between 1981 and 1987, believes Robson is the ideal man to succeed Andy Hessenthaler.

Robson (pictured) has spent the last two seasons as first team coach at Peterborough and is understood to be among the leading candidates to fill the vacant role at Priestfield.

Peacock said: "Everyone has to get a first chance in management. I had less experience than Mark and I was grateful for the chance.

"It is the next stage for Mark and he is ready. If he had the chance now to manage a side, it is perfect timing and he would do a good job.

"Everyone has to have that break, whether it’s Harry Redknapp, Alex Ferguson or Alan Curbishley and whoever gives Mark his first chance, won’t regret it."

Robson, a former Tottenham, West Ham and Charlton winger, has not managed before but started coaching at the age of 18 and holds a UEFA Pro Licence.

Peacock added: "He’s a good coach, an effervescent character on the training field and his knowledge and enthusiasm rubs off on the players

"Whoever gives him that first chance will see exciting football."
