Former Maidstone United defender Chris Smalling has continued his meteoric rise to the top by being named in Fabio Capello's England squad for Wednesday's friendly with France at Wembley.
The 20-year-old former Chatham Grammar School for Boys pupil (pictured) has hit the headlines after progressing from the Ryman League ranks with the Stones to Manchester United, via Premier League Fulham, in a little over two years.
He swapped Maidstone for Craven Cottage in the summer of 2008 and his impressive form for the London side saw him earn a £12m switch to Old Trafford in the summer.
He has made just eight appearances for United but has started three Champions League games and scored in one of his two Carling Cup appearances this season.
Smalling - who made his first Stones appearance as a 17-year-old in October 2007 - made nine appearances for England under-21s while at Fulham and turned out for England Schoolboys while with Maidstone.
