FORMER Mayor of Ramsgate Dick Dickinson has died, aged 78, after a long illness.

Cllr Dickinson had served on Thanet council for many years, most recently representing Sir Moses Montefiore ward for Labour.

He moved to the town during the war, fell in love with the area and never moved away.

Whilst working on the railways as a train driver, Cllr Dickinson gave a lot of his time to support the Trade Union movement, which included campaigning for better conditions in the workplace.

He became Mayor of Ramsgate in 2001 and along with his partner Lillian made several appearances in the town.

Whilst serving as a Councillor he held many positions within council including Chair of Council, Chair of Group, Committee Chair and a Member of Cabinet.

Group leader Richard Nicholson said: “Dick was an outstanding Councillor, always looking out for his ward members and doing his best to promote Thanet. I am proud to have served alongside Dick on the Council and I know many other Councillors feel this way. “

Local MP Steve Ladyman added: “Dick has given me nothing but support throughout my time as a local MP and his hard work in Ramsgate will be sorely missed.

“He was a local character that helped many local people and organisations, his hard work and dedication will not be forgotten”

Dick Dickinson's funeral will be held on Tuesday 25 May at 3.20pm at Margate Crematorium. There are to be no flowers, but donations are welcome to either the Cancer Care Appeal (QEQMH) or Pilgrims Hospice Margate and can be sent to Palmers Undertakers, 30 Hardres Street, Ramsgate, CT11 8QF.
