FIREFIGHTERS have welcomed a decision to knock down a disused social club which has been the scene of several blazes.

Plans to demolish the former Earl Estate club, off Bligh Way in Strood, were announced by Medway Council less than 24 hours after fire ripped through the building.

Fire crews were called to the site last Thursday night. It took almost two and a half hours before they were stood down.

Watch manager at Strood, Marc Rosier, said the building has been on fire a dozen times since the club closed its doors to the public. He added: “I am pleased with the council’s decision. I really do think it is best for the community.

“Not only does it tie up our resources when we are called out to the social club but the children don’t seem to realise the danger they are putting themselves in.

“The building is boarded up so if a fire accelerates quicker than they think they could have trouble getting out of the building and then we could be looking at a tragedy.

“Buildings that are due to be demolished or are derelict are not playgrounds. They are dangerous places and children need to be aware of that especially with the summer holidays coming up.”
