ANGRY lorry drivers who lost their jobs after the closure of a supermarket depot protested at the company’s alleged failure to compensate for their loss of earnings.
Britain’s General Union, GMB, staged the protest at the Morrisons depot in Aylesford on Tuesday claiming the company has not paid thousands of pounds redundancy pay to more than 160 drivers who were made redundant on January 15.
They claim Morrisons are "bullying" former staff into signing a "compromise agreement" waiving their right to take the company to tribunal before they pay any money.
Jeff Goswell, GMB organinser said: "Morrisons took over Safeways in 2004. It is completely out of order that drivers laid off three weeks ago should have no income during the last two weeks due to the company’s incompetence.
"Also, GMB will not stand idly by and see our members threatened with loss of income if they do not sign away their rights."
A spokesman for Morrisons said: "A small proportion of payments are taking longer to process than we originally anticipated.
"These are being dealt with as quickly and efficiently as possible to ensure that those affected receive the correct payments.
"We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
Contrary to reports, employees have not been asked to sign a ‘compromise agreement’.
