Four-car pile-up causes jams

RUSH-HOUR motorists travelling to and from Sheppey endured yet more delays this morning. A four-car accident on the Kingsferry Bridge at about 8am blocked the only route on and off the island for an hour.

It is the second blockage on the A249 during the peak morning period in as many weeks on what is currently the only route on and off the island.

The accident occurred on the Sheppey-bound carriageway, which is already reduced to one lane on the approach to the bridge because of construction work for the new Swale Crossing.

Police controlled the flow of traffic past the crash scene while the debris was cleared. There were no injuries but one woman was treated for minor shock.
