Watch mourners pay
tribute to PC Pratt.
by Rob Daly
Hundreds of
people lined the streets on the Isle of Sheppey for the funeral of
a Kent police officer who died whilst on duty last month.
PC Phillip Pratt, 26, was putting out
cones to divert traffic on the A249 near Sittingbourne following an
earlier accident on Sunday, June 14 when he was struck by a
car.
He was treated by paramedics at the scene
before being airlifted to the Royal London Hospital, where he was
pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
A horse-drawn hearse carrying PC Pratt's
coffin, escorted by police, made its way from Sheerness to
Minster's Bethel Congregational Church past friends, family and a
guard of honour formed by colleagues from the force.
Local residents came out to pay their respects
by lining the route of the cortege, with many wearing bright
colours as family had requested.
Halo by Beyonce played as six police
colleagues carried his coffin from the hearse to the church. With
little space inside the church arrangements were made so the
service could be broadcast onto the streets for people to hear.
PC Toby Burns, a long time friend, read out
some words on behalf of PC Pratt's finance Debbie O'Neill and her
two sons: "Phillip came into out lives six years ago and with him
came such love, laughter and happiness. He had a natural ability to
make people laugh."
A colleague, PC Robin Brenchley, said he was
"a determined young man and nothing was going to get in his way of
being a regular police officer".
After the funeral, PC Pratt's body was taken
to Sheppey Cemetery for a private family service. They have also
asked for donations to be made to the Kent Air Ambulance in his
memory.
Police are
continuing to appeal for witnesses to the crash, which involved a
grey Peugeot 206 and happened shortly after 8am just off the
Sheppey-bound carriageway at the junction with the slip road to the
A2 Key Street.
