Gillingham reserves produced an impressive performance to comfortably beat Millwall’s second XI at Dartford on Tuesday night.
Goals from former Welling striker Gabriel Odunaike, Adam Miller (pictured) and youth player Charlie Stimson saw the Gills beat a strong Millwall side 3-0 in the Combination League at Princes Park.
Impressive performances all round will have pleased manager Mark Stimson, with young winger Luke Rooney putting in a decent display.
Millwall lined up with a useful forward line of Jason Price and Lewis Grabban, but defenders Garry Richards and Tom Wynter stood up to the test well. Pacey winger Dave Martin was also kept in check by Jack Payne, who played at right-back.
The first half ended goalless but it wasn’t without chances, as Rooney had a shot tipped over and Cumbers, who was back following a month loan at Ebbsfleet, fired just over from outside the box.
Cumbers again came inches wide after the break and Gills took the lead on 49 minutes when Miller’s cross was converted by Odunaike.
Miller himself got on the scoresheet four minutes later with a header following Chris Palmer’s corner kick.
Millwall had their opportunities, but found keeper Alan Julian in good form, and he made a great save from Kiernan Hughes-Mason’s powerful shot.
The best goal of the night came with two minutes left as Rooney delivered a perfectly weighted pass to the feet of Stimson and he slotted home past John Sullivan.
