Gangs turn park into fear zone

GANGS of rival youths are turning a recreational spot in Gillingham into a no-go area.

Residents living near Gillingham Park, off Canterbury Street, say their lives are being made a misery by the gangs - nicknamed Chavs and Sweaties - with their constant vandalism and fighting.

Groups of 40 youths regularly congregate in the park. Residents say they are now afraid to walk through the park once night sets in.

Complaints have also been made about youths hiding in the park bushes, waiting to pounce on unsuspecting victims.

Park warden Eddie Hughes said: “It’s a nice park, but it has got worse, even in the year I’ve been here. People are afraid to come in here at night.” He said the gangs visit the park at night and often surround their victim.

One of the main areas of complaint is the inadequate lighting of both the main park area and adjoining pathways. A Medway Council spokesman said the council was looking at plans to regenerate the park.
